A Pediatric Neurologist is a medical doctor who specializes in diagnosing and treating neurological conditions in children up to the age of 18. Often, they work alongside other pediatric medicine specialists, such as Pediatricians, to coordinate the care of their patients. The neurological conditions treated by pediatric neurologists range from serious diseases such as epilepsy, cerebral palsy, and muscular dystrophy, to serious mental health issues such as ADHD and autism. A pediatric neurologist’s job is to diagnose and provide a prognosis for these conditions, as well as determine the best course of treatment. The diagnosis might take various forms, such as MRI scans, CAT scans, EEGs, or lumbar punctures to collect fluid from around the spinal cord. Following a diagnosis, treatment plans can include medication, physical therapy, occupational therapy, psychological therapy, and even surgery. Pediatric neurologists also provide preventative care and help children develop healthy habits that can reduce the likelihood of neurological issues occurring in the future. They will use their expertise to advise families on diet, exercise, and lifestyle changes that can protect children’s neurological well-being. In summary, pediatric neurologists provide care and treatment for all manner of neurological problems in children, ranging from brain injuries to mental health issues. They diagnose using a variety of tests, and provide treatments such as medication and therapy. Furthermore, they help children create habits for future neurological health.
