Neuro-oncology is a specialized field of medicine that focuses on the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of individuals with primary central nervous system (CNS) tumors. The CNS includes the brain, nerves, and spinal cord. These tumors can affect people of any age, gender, or race. Although they are rare, the incidence of primary CNS tumors is increasing. Neuro-oncologists are medical specialists who take a multidisciplinary approach to treating these tumors. This means that they work in teams of neurologists, neurosurgeons, oncologists, radiation oncologists, radiologists, and pathologists to provide comprehensive care. Treatment of brain tumors depends on the type and stage of the tumor. Surgery is often the first step in treatment, followed by radiation therapy and/or chemotherapy. Many tumors are sensitive to chemotherapy drugs, but some require different types of treatment. Neuro-oncologists are also involved in clinical trials to evaluate new treatments and find new therapies that may be more effective. They work with patients to understand what type of treatment is suitable for their particular condition. The goal of neuro-oncology is to provide the patient with the best possible outcome and quality of life during and after treatment. Neuro-oncology specialists are dedicated to understanding the complexities of CNS tumors and finding cures for them.
