The human brain is a complex organ, and maintaining its health should be a priority for all of us. Unfortunately, some people suffer from neurological diseases and disorders. These conditions can affect the brain’s ability to function normally and can cause a variety of symptoms, ranging from mood and cognitive changes to motor and sensory deficits. Diseases of the brain and nervous system can be caused by genetic mutations, environmental and lifestyle factors, or infections. Genetics typically plays a major role in inherited neuro-degenerative diseases such as Huntington’s Disease, Alzheimer’s Disease, and Parkinson’s Disease. Environmental factors such as exposure to certain toxins or excessive alcohol consumption have also been linked to neurological diseases. Stroke is one of the leading causes of neurological disease and disability in adults, and is caused by interruption to the blood supply to the brain. The resulting lack of oxygen and glucose can cause cells to die, leading to lasting motor and sensory deficits. Other neurologically-related disorders include Multiple Sclerosis, epilepsy, dystonia, and traumatic brain injury. The diagnosis of a brain or nervous system disorder often involves an in-depth evaluation by a neurologist or neuropsychologist. This may include physical and cognitive assessments, imaging studies such as an MRI or CT scan, and lab tests. Treatment options vary depending upon the type and cause of the disorder, but may include medication, radiation therapy, physical therapy, or even surgery. No matter the cause, neurological diseases can be devastating for those affected and their families. However, it is important to remember that research is constantly being done in this field, and new treatments and advances in medical technology are leading to better outcomes and better lives for those living with neurological diseases.
