Natural language processing (NLP) is a field of computer science, artificial intelligence, and linguistics concerned with the interactions between computers and human (natural) languages. NLP enables a computer to understand human speech, and entails building systems that can represent, analyze, manipulate, and generate human language. NLP is used extensively in various applications including speech recognition, natural language understanding, machine translation, dialogue system, information retrieval, text summarization, question answering, and sentiment analysis. The goal of NLP is to allow people and machines to interact in natural, human language, which can be spoken or written. NLP involves the development of algorithms that interpret various forms of data, be it words, audio, or video, and build tasks that enable machines to understand and generate results from these inputs. One of the most important aspects of NLP is its ability to understand syntax and semantics, which allows the system to comprehend the meaning of the human input. For instance, depending on the context, a computer can accurately determine the difference between “fill” and “fill up”. NLP tools facilitate automated categorization and tagging, word sense disambiguation, and sentiment analysis. For example, natural language processing is used to automatically categorize phrases and topics into predetermined classes. Additionally, it is used to recognize sentiment in text, such as whether the text is positive or negative. Due to its increasing popularity, natural language processing has many practical applications in industries such as customer service, healthcare, finance, and marketing. NLP also plays an important role in artificial intelligence and automated decision making. Consequently, it is an extremely valuable technology and is constantly advancing.
