Developmental disorders are conditions that cause a group of physical changes that can interfere with day-to-day activities and can cause difficulty with language, social interaction, and daily functioning. These conditions can be divided into two main categories: autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and other developmental disorders. ASD is a developmental disorder that affects a person’s communication abilities, social skills, and behavior. People with ASD may experience delays or disturbances in language, communication, social interaction, repetitive behavior, and sensory processing. Depending on the individual and the severity of the disorder, there can be large variations in how these symptoms present themselves. Treatment typically includes a combination of educational, therapeutic, and medical interventions. Other common developmental disorders include speech and language disorders, learning disabilities, motor disorders, and emotional and behavior disorders. Speech and language disorders can include difficulty articulating or processing language, as well as delayed language acquisition. Learning disabilities can range from difficulty in reading to math, writing, and other academic subjects. Motor disorders include problems with sensory input and fine motor skills. Finally, behavioral and emotional disorders may include problems with regulating emotions, adjusting to change, and/or managing impulses. Treatment typically starts with a comprehensive assessment that takes into account the individual’s challenges, strengths, and goals. This helps determine the best approach to meet the individual’s needs, which may include education, therapies, medications, and lifestyle modifications. With the right combination of therapies and the right approach, individuals with developmental disorders can learn to manage their symptoms and reach their full potential.
