Abnormal Psychology is the branch of psychology that focuses on understanding, diagnosing, and treating individuals with maladaptive behaviors and psychological disorders. It often involves the evaluation and treatment of behavior, mood, cognition, and personality disorders. It can involve the study of psychotic, anxiety, personality, and behavior disorders, among others. Abnormal psychology also seeks to understand the nature of abnormal behavior and its causes. The aim of abnormal psychology is to understand, research, and treat psychological disorders. This requires a thorough understanding of both the psychological and physical components of mental illness. Abnormal psychology involves many assessments which are used to diagnose disorders and evaluate clients. Assessments include interviews, psychological tests, laboratory tests, physical evaluations, and medical history review. Psychotherapy is often an important part of abnormal psychology treatment. It can help clients develop healthy coping strategies and insight into their behaviors. Treatment may also include group and family therapy, medication, and lifestyle interventions. One of the primary objectives of abnormal psychology is to help people with mental illness lead healthier, more productive lives. Through research, prevention programs, and improved treatments, healthcare professionals can hopefully lessen the burden of mental illness on individuals and society.
