Title : Neurological disorders and learning disabilities: Exploring connections

Abstract:

Neurological disorder is a factor that affects learning. A Learning Disability is said to be a neurological disorder. A ‘learning disability’ results from a difference in the way a person’s brain “is wired”. Children with Learning Disabilities may perform better or worse than their peers for different reasons. Hence, teachers and researchers can’t be indifferent towards such children with Learning Disabilities. In addition,  conventional ways of coping with such children may not yield desired outcomes. Children with learning disabilities may face problems and difficulties in learning in general and in particular reading, writing, spelling, reasoning, recalling and / or organizing information. The issues can be minimized to an extent that the sufferers can do their daily chores and perform even better in academics too in order to succeed in their specific careers. But instructors must be aware of neurological issues and special teaching strategies to manage such children in the classes/schools and at the same succeed in their future tasks. Parents if educated can tackle their wards in far better way by creating a smoother home environment. Therefore, they also need to work with professionals to learn about strategies for dealing with specific difficulties. The presentation will focus on neurological issues with special reference to learning disabilities. Considering that neurological disorders can’t be cured, educational researchers can’t show their indifference by surrendering themselves and ignoring such a crucial social issue. Therefore, there is always a need to delve deep into the neurological disorders ( such as cognition, memory, reading, ADHD, etc) so that special education strategies can be appropriately evolved to cater to the need of special learners.

Audience Take Away Notes:

  • They will learn some coping strategies of learning for learners with disability.

  • This presentation can further enlighten the faculty to study deep into neurological disorder ( i.e. ADHD), and innovate specific strategy to deal with them that can enhance their interest in learning.
  • Yes, the practitioners will be able to get further benefitted.
  • May be. This is another topic that can be taken up.
